Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said before the game that it would be difficult to shut down Otani and Mike Trout, but he did it halfway. Otani threw a four-hitter, swallowed 2K and grounded into a double play, and the Angels lost 6-2 to snap their four-game winning streak.
Otani, batting third and designated hitter in the Angels' three-game homerun against the Marlins on Sunday, failed to hit a line drive in the first inning and turned into a double play to end the game. He struck out three and five innings later and hit a fly ball to shortstop in the seventh.
Ohtani struggled against left-handers Jesus Luzardo (starter) and Tanner Scott (reliever), and his batting average fell to 2.75 after four shutouts.
Chuot went 2-for-4, driving in the Angels' first run in five innings and scoring on Brandon Drury's solo shot in the sixth, the Angels' only two runs on 10 hits.
The Marlins answered with six runs on 16 hits. Outfielder Bryan De La Cruz had a four-hit, two-RBI, three-run performance, including a two-run shot in the seventh inning, and Jorge Soler had a solo shot in the third.
Sam Bachman, the Angels' 2021 first-round pick, made his debut in the bullpen and took over in the eighth inning, pitching two innings and giving up one run on four hits while striking out four.
